The Simple Count
Christmas Day falls on 25 December every year, so the count is the number of days from today to that date in the current or the following year.
Because Christmas sits at a fixed address in the calendar — day 359 of a common year, day 360 in a leap year — you can also run the arithmetic backwards: subtract the day-of-year of today from 359 and the answer appears without ever opening a calendar.
How Many Weeks Until Christmas?
Take the day count and divide by seven. The remainder is the awkward leftover, and most people plan around the whole weeks plus a note of the extra days.
From 10 October 2026, for example, the count is 76 days, which works out as 10 full weeks and 6 days. The checkpoints below show when each round-week mark arrives in 2026, so the shrinking runway is easy to see at a glance:

Why a Calculator Helps
Doing it by hand means adding the remaining days of this month, the lengths of the months in between, and the days of December up to the 25th. That is a lot of chances to drop a 31-day month.
A Worked Example: Counting from 1 November
Start with 1 November. November has 30 days, so the days left in November after the 1st are 29, and adding the 25 days of December up to Christmas gives 29 + 25 = 54 days.
Run the same shape of sum from any start date: days left in the current month, full months in between, then 25. The calculator performs the identical arithmetic, only faster and with no risk of using 31 for a 30-day month.
Plan With the Number
A day count turns a vague sense of "soon" into a date you can act on for shopping, travel or shipping cutoffs.
Working backwards is the most useful direction. Start at 25 December, subtract the time a parcel needs to arrive, then subtract a few buffer days for wrapping and surprises. The date you land on is the real ordering deadline, and it usually sits one or two weeks earlier than instinct suggests.
If autumn deadlines come first where you are, the same backwards method applies to the days until Halloween — through October the two countdowns run side by side, and the nearer one always deserves the shipping budget first.
Advent: the Four-Sunday Countdown
Many households count down in Sundays rather than days. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before 25 December, and in 2026 that first date falls on 29 November, with the following Advent Sundays on 6, 13 and 20 December.
That gives the season a built-in rhythm: four weekends of preparation, often marked by lighting one more candle each week. If a weekly plan suits you better than a daily number, the Advent Sundays are the natural frame — and the calculator still tells you exactly how many days sit between any of those Sundays and the day itself.
Working It Out by Hand
From the start of December the count is straightforward: subtract the current day number from 25. Earlier in the year, add the days left in the current month to the full lengths of the months between, then add 25.

A Paper Chain Countdown for Kids and Classrooms
A paper chain turns the number into something you can hold: one link per day, torn off each morning. The only rule is that the chain must match the day count on the morning you make it.
Start on 25 November 2026 and the chain needs exactly 30 links, one for each day between then and Christmas. Classrooms often begin at the first Advent Sunday instead, which gives a 26-link chain this year — long enough for a whole class to share the job of removing one link per day.
The Twelve Days After Christmas
Traditionally, Christmas is not a single day but a season: the Twelve Days of Christmas run from 25 December to 5 January, counted inclusively, and end the evening before Epiphany on 6 January.
That season overlaps the other big countdown of the year. While the twelve days are running, the days until New Year counter is falling toward zero, which makes late December the one stretch of the calendar where two countdowns tick along together.
Common Counting Mistakes
The usual slip is treating December as a full 31 days when counting up to the 25th. Only 25 days of December belong to the span, not the whole month.
The second is forgetting that the count resets on 26 December, when it jumps forward to the following year rather than reaching zero and stopping.
