The Weekend Rule
Business-day counts remove Saturdays and Sundays from the total, leaving the days most offices are actually open. The rule is applied across the whole span, not just to the two end dates.
Why It Matters
Contracts, shipping windows and invoice terms are usually written in business days, so a calendar-day figure overstates the real time available by roughly two days for every week of the period.
Holidays Are Separate
Public holidays are not removed automatically, because they vary by country and by year. Subtract them by hand, or treat the result as an upper bound on the time available.
Counting From or To a Deadline
A common trap is counting the start day itself as a business day. Most agreements count the day after the trigger date, so check the wording before quoting a figure.
For short spans the difference is easy to verify by hand: a Friday-to-Monday gap is one business day, not three calendar days.
Worked Examples
From Monday to Friday in the same week there are 4 business days, because the count starts the day after the trigger date. A Saturday or Sunday in the middle adds nothing at all.
A 30-calendar-day window that begins on a Friday contains only about 21 business days, which is why the wording of a deadline changes the real time available so much.
